Green Initiative

Our Green Initiative

Since 1922, water has been and will continue to be our business, and our day to day work is centered around protecting this valuable resources. At Ortman Drilling, we also pride ourselves in historically choosing green initiatives to decrease our energy needs, lower our impact on the local environment, and recycle products from our daily office and field work. It is our goal to make these small but significant improvements for our local environment and community while still achieving a long – term sustainable plan for our business.

  • In the 1970s, Ortman Drilling installed geothermal heat and cooling in the original home / office. In the 1990s, the home / office was no longer large enough to contain our personnel or office equipment. A new office was constructed with geothermal as its heat and cooling system. Today, both the original home / office and new office use geothermal for atmosphere conditioning. To learn more about geothermal for your home or business, visit our Geothermal division
  • In 2014 and 2015, our office, shop, and storage buildings were retrofitted with LED lamps as opposed to fluorescent. Per bulb, the average reduction in wattage was roughly 53 or a 73% reduction in energy usage for lighting. Additionally, the lamps carry a 10-year lifetime warranty and 100,000-hour life span. Not only did our energy bill decrease by 30% - 40%, but the hours spent replacing burnt out bulbs per year has been decreased to … zero. Lastly, a big bonus, our shop and storage buildings are MUCH brighter.
  • In 2015, Ortman Drilling invested in solar panels in an effort to further reduce our energy consumption from the power grid. Unfortunately, at this point in time, efficient and long – life batteries to harness and store energy from solar panels are not available, which would have enabled us to further remove ourselves from the grid. When a new and efficient battery reaches the market, it may just be our next Green Initiative purchase.
  • On a daily basis, Ortman Drilling recycles office paper, cardboard packaging from our water system products, and salvageable metals. Our effort is to reduce the amount of waste leaving our facility and sent to local landfills. We still have a long way to travel on this road to reduce our waste contribution, but we are progressing.

Ortman Drilling will continue to seek out new and sustainable means of reducing our impact on the environment and lower our energy needs. It is part of our history, and it will continue to be an attainable goal we strive to achieve in our future.
